Citi Field Vegan 2018 Season, Game 1

[A 2019 update! Please see most recent report on vegan offerings at Citi Field here.]

And just like that, it’s baseball season again!  With a beautiful Saturday in the forecast, a win on their opening day and a free teddy bear promotion, I was at Citi Field for the New York Mets weekend opener.  Of course I was also eager to try any new vegan options… even though I already knew there wasn’t any new options.  There are actually less options than there were last season. 😐Since my visit to Yankees Stadium last year, I was hoping that The Mets concession might follow suite by incorporating more… hoping they could also create a handy Stadium Dining Guide that listed, clearly, vegan options within the park. (I just found their 2018 version. I haven’t poured over yet, but they have a clear list of vegan foods that clears up the “Are the big hot pretzels vegan?” “Is the batter for the deep-fried Oreos vegan?” that I experience in Citi Field.)  But no such luck.  C’mon Mets people, get with the program.

The new menu board.

Though Citi has the basic Yves Veggie Dog staple still available, along with plenty snack sides, there is little else to get excited about.  Last year’s tofu Bao option is gone as far as I can tell.  Their veggie burger is now of unknown origin, no longer labeled Yves.  And new stand-alone vendors, some that were housed within clubhouses not open to all fans, are now peppered about.  But even when these exciting, local hot spots (Dō Cookie Dough, Arancini Brothers) offer vegan options at their regular locations, they don’t offer them at Citi Field.

With a hot dog and fixin’s, that baseball craving is met, but I want more vegan baseball-style grub.

Other stuff that is vegan but not so much baseball-ish: Avocado roll and edamame from Daruma of Tokoyo.  Daruma is located by Section 105, inside the glass doors.

Bash Burger is one of the many meat-centric options at Citi Field. They have got a delicious potato option that we partook in: The Salt & Vinegar Fries.

For $10.50 you get a pile much like this. Soft potato weaving and twisting in salt and vinegar.  So flavorful and satisfying in a way that Nathan’s is not.  Half way through eating them I did get a little uneasy thinking they may not be vegan.  I contacted them through Instagram for confirmation.

The V For Vegan slice at Two Boots Pizza is another option.  I love the clear, bold “vegan,” the clarity on the vegan cheese used, the green.  Thanks, Two Boots, for making it easy.

You can also get a nice fruit salad to go along with your home run apple.  You can find the fruit salad near the sushi near Section 105

Once you have your grub, watch the show.  Hopefully you’ll see the apple plenty during the game.

And you may even get to meet the Thumbs Down Guy and share a thumbs up!

Let’s Go Mets, 2018!
