Watermelon Steak at Ducks Eatery

The smoked watermelon steak at Ducks Eatery in Manhattan’s East Village broke the internet not too long ago. They were selling a $75 smoked watermelon that was sold out months in advance as the chef could only make 2 a night. Now a slice of his watermelon steak is on special at their eatery all summer long!

I couldn’t wait to try this very unique dish, especially after inquiring about it being vegan. The gravy is usually not vegan, but they can accommodate to make the dish entirely vegan. It was a relief that the waitress was able to confirm all this competently… Duck’s is, after all, a very meat-centric eatery.

Here it is–a sliced of smoked watermelon steak, pesto potatoes, and charred sugar snap-peas. I couldn’t take enough pictures of it!

How special this dish was! The texture of the watermelon was so pleasing, compressed and juicy and filled with smokiness. The charred top contrasting the bright red, so crazy I am eating a savory watermelon. And it was very savory. The gravy and sides were very salty to counter the sweetness of the watermelon. It tasted smoky; it tasted salty; and it tasted, still, like watermelon… in a way.

The transformation in form of one of my favorite fruits was as intriguing. Made me appreciate every bite.

Rare watermelon

And a delicious drink special. Great service and a fantastic vegan option, how wonderful a meal at Ducks Eatery.
