Vegan Treasures of Staten Island
Made in Sicily in Grant City

The Sicilian chick pea fritter Panelle is “accidentally” vegan. But Staten Island’s only Sicilian eatery, Made in Sicily in Grant City, has got ’em nice and piping hot so you don’t need to get oil all over your stove like I did last I made it. They’ve also got lots of traditional sweet and savory bites, as well as imported groceries. I get excited about authentic Sicilian, like Made in Sicily and this place in Brooklyn, because I myself am an authentic Sicilian–well, partly; and it is not that easy to find.

My grandmother, from whom I received a good dose of wacky Old World Sicilian intensity, and my more mellow Neapolitan grandfather–he was a talented artist. And his parents were theatrical performers. I plan on researching this further when I have a chance… meantime, some chick pea fritters!
