Up New York

Of all the ways up New York, the Taconic is my favorite. The rural stretch of highway that originates in White Plains sets the tone for a different kind of landscape. Besides the newly renovated Tappan Zee Bridge, now the Mario Cuomo Bride, Native American nomenclature try to remind you that this was all once free of concrete. A bit of a useless gesture in the face of attempted genocide, yes.

Lucy wasn’t in when I stopped by, but effort and intent steers much of the world.

Now I was so disappointed that I didn’t get to try the red velvet vegan waffles that pop up daily at Moto Coffee/Machine that I am posting the menu here. Because I feel it’s a unique and exciting vegan option. Like The Terminator, I’ll be back.

I did manage to find a vegan breakfast in advance of my photo workshop, thank goodness. It helped me sustain walking and photographing the entirety of the afternoon. Winkle’s Bakery‘s tofu breakfast burrito was just what I needed!

Tofu and veggies in a piping hot pressed tortilla. Crispy potatoes, house-made salsa, and a little cup of fruit.

After and back south, a stop at Lagusta’s Luscious.

And then to Commissary!

Almond latte for the ride back south.

Lagusta (chocolates) and Maresa (macarons) make vegan magic. I have very high standards with sweet treats, having my share of terrible vegan sweets in my 20+ years of being vegan. These ladies are the crΓ¨me de la crΓ¨me. Top notch, quality ingredients always (no processed garbage or packages), natural colorings and flavors that are never over-sweet and cheap feeling, a consistently beautiful aesthetic, ethically minded–they truly are the real deal. Maresa’s macarons are the best I’ve ever had. They are downright perfect. So though I want to report on a variety of vegan options–new places that are embracing plant-based, I must pay homage. Lagusta and Maresa’s expanding vegan empire is a tremendous high point for the vegan world. My box: Matcha, Samoa and Birthday Cake macarons, a marzipan cookie, a brownie and some caramels. All amazing, as usual.
