The Colors of Home: Apartment Design Break

As soon as I looked at my apartment during my search, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it.  Now it’s coming along… nearing the end of phase one alterations.  Most prominent is color.  Aesthetically, but also as a means to divide the space.

My work area.  I’m pretty proud of hanging those floating shelves by myself, though my father’s laser level and a forsaken drill did all the hard work. I will eventually be adorning them with succulents.  When I have money to splurge on succulents.

The strange crawl space entrance was a bit of an eye sore… an eye sore framed with molding for some reason.  After finding a large painting to cover it proved way too expensive, I embraced the frame, repainting it a dark brown and laid down an adhesive design to match my mid-century motif!

It no longer looked like a strange portal.

My mid-century drop leaf table was a bit of a challenge but ended up mine in the end, in accordance to prophecy.  Besides it being perfect for the small space I had to create a dining area, it offered additional storage (It used to have a sewing machine within it!), matched my other design choices, and was sold to me by a pleasant lady in Yonkers. If I can get chairs in time, my goal is to host a Friendsgiving at my place!  The hutch is also authentic vintage, picked up from a nice couple in Middlesex, New Jersey.

I have had vintage classroom maps in storage for quite some time.  Finally they’re up, thanks to The Greek who tried to talk me through the entire process.  But I may never be “next level” when it comes to mounting skills.  I’d much rather understand my emotions deeply, communicate them accurately and understand their value and the role they play in my overall well-being. Woman-skills?  Far more important to me.  Now this space is ready for its record player.

The second map is in the craft room, which is not ready for photos yet.  But I was so ecstatic that we also mounted this map that I had to take a picture.  This covers the door to the boiler which I will never need to access.

A bit of a style change in my bedroom.  This was a deliberate choice to create an escape. Muted grays and blues and white wash, the vintage vanity (from a woman in the Rockaways, Queens) is my favorite.  The adhesive wallpaper was a tedious job but well worth it.

The bathroom has design limitations as well, but I did cover dark green tiles with these ornate tile covers.  And this toilet paper holder is finally up securely.  My last attempt fell in the middle of the night and scared the bejesus out of me. Stayed tuned for phase 2!
