The Beaches of Gateway National Recreation Area
Gunnison Beach & Great Kills Beach

Oh how I love Gateway National Recreation Area! After some tasks at both the Sandy Hook and Staten Island units, it was a must to stand next to the sea and let calm my innards.

First at the Sandy Hook unit–Gunnison Beach, we discovered, is a nude beach. I saw all the signs, but it didn’t really sink in until I saw lots of naked men on our walk to the shore.

A large portion of the beach had been closed off for the birds, but there was plenty of space for us.

An interesting stop after some other attractions.

Similarly, after the fairy shoot, I had to get to the shore of Raritan Bay. Though Staten Island gets a bad wrap for being a dump so long, I did enter the softly lapping water–which was clean and refreshing.

I’d like to come back and clean up a bit. It’s a pretty shore, but is badly littered.

I am so thankful for Gateway National Recreation Area–bringing preserved nature to the bustling tri-state area,
