Summer To-do’s:
Storage Solution Sculpture, Part 2
The Dream of the 90s

My apartment is very long, with a narrow hallway to the bedrooms in the back which I sock-slide upon, Risky Business-style, often. If I am ever missing in action too long, I may have broken my neck because of this. But it is down this long hallway where I envisioned a 3D form of my memories on the walls, an artistic archive in a museum of self, in honor and in gratitude. So I devoted some time this summer with these large scale hot glue gun projects, the 80’s… and now the 90’s.

I was so happy that this X-Girl shirt still fit me! So I tried to make this picture like it was 25 years ago. I used to rock X-Girl and X-Large on the regular, hitting up stores like Liquid Sky, Patricia Field’s and Supreme. Ah, the East Village in the 90’s. This here shirt I bought later on eBay while feeling nostalgic about all the amazing threads I gave away through the years. It was founded by Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon and apparently is still active in Japan.

A lot of the large artifacts that do not fit in my archive are bags I used to have. Bags I blinged out. I called myself Kabuki Girl, after the Desecendent’s song, long before I would utilize versions of it decades later as my log-ins. They were one of my favorite bands and, back then, the music you knew and liked was extremely special. You would have to actually be “cool” to know about “cool” music. Not like today.

I was “straightedge” for 5 years. Till Elliott Smith’s romanticizing of alcohol broke my edge. πŸ˜‚

The final project, freeing up a lot of space in my soon to be crafting room… My platformed Adidas shelltoes from when I raved, the Kill Rock Stars/Riot Grrrl take-over, my ridiculous self-portrait from high school, early zines and related printed media… I am so glad I kept all this stuff! And my subculture experiences can make up a 90’s encyclopedia.

Some of my more elaborate bags will have their own shadow boxes. They will be on a retractable wire so they can be viewed on all sides. Peep the Supreme sticker. I can’t believe kids are still wearing their stuff.

Finishing up these hot glue gun projects were a big part of my July to-do. Godspeed, August. I gotta get outta here!
