More Angel Hunting in the 5 Boroughs (Manhattan) Big City Angels

I scoured Manhattan for this second report of Angels in the five boroughs. Starting all the way at the bottom and ending all the way at the top. The result a huge selection of big city angels, inside and out, funerary and not, in several mediums. Starting here at the entrance of the Manhattan Bridge, in the image of the tragic Audrey Munson, Miss Manhattan. This wouldn’t be the only sculpture I’d capture that she modeled for.

Nice wings you got there. That song reminds me of living in Seattle.

That is Ms. Munson again, all the way on top of the Manhattan Municipal Building.

There, is that better? There are so many gorgeous buildings near Foley Square. And lots of happy couples posing in front of City Hall.

Catching more angels…

Wings galore

The Columbus Circle angel who’s covered in pigeons. But I liked them all over it.

Then they got to posing.

Off Cathedral Parkway, the wacky sculpture outside Cathedral of Saint John the Divine. The sculpture is in the grounds Peace Garden. As you can see, it is a modern sculpture, created in 1985. That’s Angel bigwig Michael battling evil in many representations.

Look at me switching between lenses like a professional.

The Cathedral’s exterior is not to be missed. So gorgeously ornate.

I didn’t check out the interior because there was an admission fee… and I wanted to move onward to angel hunt at The Met.

There was plenty of winged beauties in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It’s been awhile since I was here! Such an amazing museum. But I only had time to hit up the American Wing where I knew there were some funerary angels.

Recognize this? I saw the marble version in a cemetery in Massachusetts.

Angel perfection

Angel line-up

I have seen one like this too… in Sleepy Hollow on Black Friday last year! What a coincidence.

My favorite, the Amor caryatid from Cornelius Vanderbilt’s old mantle. Yes, that old New York money Vanderbilt. Bow your head little lady.

Pax means peace. Amor means love. These can be quite the opposing forces sometimes.

Finally, the missing angel of Harlem… of course you’re supposed to stand in front of it. But I like it on its own, with people walking by it. Officially it’s the Global Angel Wings, created to “remind humanity that we are the Angels of this Earth.”

Goodnight Angels.
