In Brooklyn

Hand in hand with widespread gentrification of the borough, Brooklyn has been losing its grit for many decades now. The once much more expansive decay of the Brooklyn Navy Yard is now undergoing a billion dollar make-over. But there is still some overgrowth and neglect to capture before shiny new real estate rears its crane. With a chilly walk through the gated areas not accessible by cars but a favorite for joggers and bikers, I hold on to Old Brooklyn.

Persistence.

Nice views. This is Brooklyn’s tragic draw… that gal across the way looking pretty, Ms. Manhattan.

The grounds of the old Brooklyn Naval Hospital Cemetery is now a park, though its old sign remains in the brush.

It’s called Naval Cemetery Landscape. But don’t get too excited about the juxtaposition of thriving park and burial ground… all the remains have been moved to Cypress Hills, which I plan to visit soon as it is close to several cemeteries… that are close to a vegan fried chicken contender.

The park was closed when I stopped by, but I’d like to return. In the meantime–Please Brooklyn, stay gritty. At least a little bit. At least while I am still here.
