Forest Lawn Cemetery
in Buffalo, New York

Another cemetery on my list gets checked off during my stay in Buffalo–Forest Lawn Cemetery. I explored most of its 269 acres on a brisk fall morning. Here is what I saw.

Aspiration. She is he reason for Forest Lawn being on my list. Ever since I saw her in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia, I wanted to see her aging bronze reaching up to the heavens.

She is quite the beauty. And sculpted by a woman, Harriet Whitney Frishmuth, hence the understanding of the female form.

I am trying to interpret these faces.

The Blocher Memorial honors Nelson W. Blocher, only son, who died at 27 inexplicably. The stories go that he died of a broken heart after his parents sabotaged his relationship with a young family maid, Katharine. His guilty parents honored his love by creating his deathbed scene true to life, clutching Katharine’s bible and welcomed by a beautiful young thing believed to be Katharine.

Beckoning creepy children

This was my other favorite monument. Similar to Nathan Baldwin’s grave at Milford Cemetery and its depictions of Love, Hope, Charity, and Faith, Phelp’s memorial contains beautiful ladies representing Hope, Charity, Fortitude, and Faith.

Charity shows her bosom.

Hope he has risen.

Oh the deers in rural cemeteries. Smart deers indeed.

He’s a mess.

I’ve been seeing this. Open mouth kisses on statues. For some dumb photoshoots no doubt. I’d look annoyed too!

So much looks to be on her mind.

“And When the Earth Shall Claim Your Limbs Then You Shall Truly Dance.”Β

I want to love like Betty and John.

Frank Lloyd Wright designed this memorial.

The monument to feminist partners… man and woman feminists.

A mamma’s boy till the very end…

Mamma’s boy with nice lips

Finally, Rick James.

Rest in peace, Buffalo.
