Date Night at Gaia & Loki
Jersey City, New Jersey

Can you believe I’ve never been to Jersey City? A quick trip for to Gaia & Loki, an all-vegan eatery in the city’s restaurant row, would prove its worth tenfold. Once in the gorgeous space, we started with the fried cauliflower. Though cauliflower is the new it appetizer, Gaia & Loki‘s preparation is top notch. So crisp and crunchy with three delicious dipping choices: a hot sauce, a sweet chili sauce, and a ramp aioli. Though it was a compromise from my initial choice (the Beet Tartar), I was very impressed.

We got the Fish & Chips platter… Once again, the substantial crunch knocked my socks off. This texture is coveted in vegan food, which has a high water content. I was also relieved that the “fish” was tofu and not a packaged food. A bite of the filet with a squirt of lemon and a dip in the tartar sauce: perfect. The “chips” were really good–packed with rosemary flavor–though not the chips one would expect traditionally in this dish.

The Pineapple Fried Rice, served in a pineapple. So good. And then I hacked away at the pineapple vessel afterwards.

I couldn’t stop snapping pictures of it.

For dessert… a slice of carrot cake. Though a nicely spiced cake it didn’t really have any carrot in it as far as I could tell. Very good tangy frosting.

Overall a fantastic meal that remained in our memory the next day. Hope we can return to try more from Gaia & Lok!
