Vegan Night 2021

I was home for a minute when I received a message about the night’s Brooklyn Cyclones game… a limited edition bobblehead my Mom would flip for was being offered and it was… Vegan Night. So, I decided to jump right back into New York City, right into the concentrated dose of energy that only Coney Island can offer this wayward soul. But the usual suspects couldn’t join, and so it would be a solo mission–grab the bobblehead, grab some vegan food and return to the couch.

Of course it wasn’t that easy. I had to wait in line to ensure I was in the first 1,000 fans to get the Jacob deGrom bobblehead. Jacob deGrom is an amazing pitcher and a passionate New York Met, the team my entire family is obsessed with and so I have always loved by proxy. But I wasn’t the only one. And so I waited within the collective enthusiasm of those who would wait in a bobblehead line. The things I do for Mom.

Ok, yeah–it was Vegan Night too like I said. So I waited on this very different line of folks who were there not for the bobblehead, but for the vegan menu!

The line was long and that is a great thing for veganism. I feel a kinship within a group of vegans, but also kinda alien too. I have been vegan so much longer than most people. For about 24 years now. I’ve been tracking down vegan food in 49 of the 50 states for decades now. I have veganized all sorts of complicated things in my kitchen. So I’m just at a different place than most, though I honor and commend anyone on a path of being vegan of course. It is exciting the world is starting to embrace the values that determined by dietary choices for so long. But I’m also like, what took you so long?

Proud vegan waiting for food–the concession stand was not ready for the demand!

In the end, I decided on the Meatball Hero.

Eating a vegan meatball hero at a baseball game… not just French fries, not just a big, soft pretzel. Vegan Paradise. But I missed Marty’s….

The mac and cheese I enjoyed after I picked off these Beyond crumbles. It really does taste like cat food smells–which is nasty.

Some vegans allowed me to take pictures of their food! This is the Beyond burger.

This is the Sausage (don’t see it) and Peppers.

And now it was time to head back to my apartment to continue to decompress from my trip.
