Blessed are the Vegan Sandwich Makers
Greenpoint, Brooklyn

Staying close to home this school recess–reluctantly–I have the goal of whittling down my list of area eateries to hit. There are so many vegan sandwiches to try! Because I am the lone mouth of this blog, it’d have to be one day at a time. 🀀 First: The Pig Savin’ Rib Sandwich at Louie’s Luncheonette in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

Louie’s Luncheonette is a vegan meat maker who’s got a deli counter window down an unassuming block next to the Pulaski Bridge. It was their Pig Savin’ Rib Sandwich that had me taking the subway through Brooklyn, into Manhattan and onto Queens to walk over the bridge from Long Island City. The lure: it’s supposed to be reminiscent of the McRib. Now I must admit that when I was a kid, I really enjoyed the McRib at McDonalds. I know, I know—disgusting!

But nothing disgusting here: just their housemade vegan meat, raw white onion and pickle smothered in BBQ sauce. It really had that nostalgic taste, though I wanted the BBQ sauce a tad sweeter since the vegan ham was appropriately salty.

Take a look… it was as tasty as it looks.

Every bite a new picture.

And while I was in Greenpoint, I took the opportunity to to visit the much buzzed about Xilonen, a high-end mostly vegan Mexican eatery with some prime real estate at the intersection of Williamsburg and Greenpoint. By recommendation, I tried the Green Chorizo Quesadilla with hoja santa, black bean salsa, below.

It was good, yes. But this very small quesadilla was $17—a terrible value for 2 minutes of eating. I was kind of annoyed with myself for blowing such an exorbitant amount of money at a hipster eatery… but it dissipated on the long road back to Bay Ridge.

Stick a fork in me for now… but there are more sandwiches on my list coming soon!
