Bing Fen 冰粉 🥭🍧

After a long cold afternoon of running errands in Manhattan, I was excited to reward my productivity with a unique traditional Chinese dessert, Bing Fen.

A testament to the authenticity of Jell & Chill in the East Village, my order at the counter included an informative lesson on the treat, its characteristics and its ingredients.

Their menu is mostly vegan, except for a couple of items that contain honey. After the lesson from the sweet counter gal, I went for the ManGo, made from their crystal sugar base (imported from Southwest China, where the treat originates); a daily handcrafted bing fen, a jelly made from plant seeds (Nicandra seed) from “Apple of Peru;” mango pomelo sago (similar to tapioca, made from the pith of the sago palm); fresh mango; a black sticky rice ball and tapioca pearls.

She let me take a few pics before packing it up to-go.

I enjoyed it at home. So delicious–subtly sweet, creamy, chewy, starchy, fresh and vibrant.

I didn’t want it to end! Guess I’ll have to return. Perhaps when the weather would welcome its cool freshness.
