Game of Thrones Preparation: Hot Pie’s Direwolf Bread
March 20, 2019
“She liked the last one I gave her. This one turned out better.”
This special baked treat was not on my original vegan Game of Thrones menu, but it seems ridiculous not include the most famous of the series’ baked treats: Hot Pie’s Direwolf Bread. I also just used the savory dough I used for my Seitan Frey Pie, which I’ll repost here for convenience. And I used the handy dandy stencil from this site because a whole lot of people have made this bread. But this swell post shared an accurate stencil of the show’s bread, pictured below, on top of the stencil.
Are you ready? Fine, let’s watch Hot Pie present it to Brienne.
Direwolf Dough (Adapted from A Couple Cooks)
Note: This will make several Direwolves.
2 and 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
4 teaspoons dried sage
1 cup coconut oil (at room temperature)โI used unrefined because thatโs what I had. If you donโt want coconut taste, used refined.
3/4 cup ice water
Make the dough: In a medium bowl, combine flour, salt, baking powder, and sage. Mix well so that sage is incorporated well into other dry ingredients.
Measure 1 cup of room temperature coconut oil and then drop blobs of the coconut oil into the flour mixture.
Use a pastry blender or two forks to cut it into the flour mixture until a coarse meal texture is obtained.
Sprinkle ice water over the flour a couple of tablespoons at a time, mixing gradually with fork until the dough sticks together. Add more water by the tablespoon until the dough comes together with your hands, but isnโt sticky. I didnโt have to add any extra, just so you know.
Form the dough into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate until the filling is ready, or at least 30 minutes.
Roll out dough between two sheets of parchment until it will fit dimensions of stencil.
Using a sharp knife, carefully trim around the stencil, adding scraps back to your remaining dough. After, cut the face of the dough like the stencil shows.
Transfer cut dough onto a baking sheet and put in the fridge for 10 minutes while oven heats to 350.
Place in center rack and bake approximately 20 minutes depending on the thickness of your dough. You want a golden brown.
Let it cool before handling. I guess I could have gone a bit thicker with my wolf. But I am really impressed by how it turned out!
