A Walk Through Ancient Trees
Methuselah & The Bristlecone Pines

Ancient Bristlecone Pines are the oldest living organisms in the world. Yes, in the world! Located in the Inyo National Forest near California’s Eastern Sierras, catching a glimpse of them was a definite must for me as I passed through the amazing U.S. 395. To have the chance to walk amongst these ancient trees had me giddy. What is this world we live in that I can just enter that kind of majesty of nature? It’s one that I honor and cherish, while resisting lapping up the latest fear mongered topic of the week.

As I climbed the White Mountains in my rental car, the views of the sierra got spectacular.

The start of the 4-mile loop. It is classified as “moderately strenuous” and I would say that is pretty accurate. The elevation change during the hike totals 800 feet, but there are many downhill stretches. Many spots are shaded within the forest and there are benches spread throughout the trail, as well. But there is always a reason to stop to take a picture. Take you time and make all the stops you need–it’ll make the hike more enjoyable and seem less difficult. There are steep drop offs and a very narrow path in places, I must add.

The exact location of the oldest of the bristlecone pines, dated to be about 5,000 years old, is guarded by the U.S. Forest Service. However all of these pines are adapted for that longevity.

See that whitish land? That is Death Valley National Park! I believe the Badwater Basin.

Feeling accomplished after the 4 miles

A crazy hail storm hit me on the drive out. It was pretty scary because the hail was big and the roads were flooding out. I was apprehensive driving through the road as I couldn’t gage the depth of water. A nice man pulled up to check on me and offered to guide me through it. It was a small gesture I really appreciated.

Another adventure on the road! I wonder if I saw the most ancient tree, nicknamed Methuselah. Methuselah is a biblical reference–living to be 969 years old, he was the oldest person in the bible.
