VeganMoFo #18: Peace, Dude, Cafe
October 18, 2009
I have been meaning to check this place out since Ms. CP clued me in on it. So en route campus one afternoon, after a particular grueling morning, I decided to treat myself. The all-vegan Peacefood Cafe, on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, was just the spot to awaken my tired senses. There I gobbled up the best vegan sandwich I’ve ever eaten. Yes, thee best. Though the pictures below do it no justice, imagine this: tempura-esque batter-dipped cutlets of tender seitan, creamy cashew cheese spread, green pesto, arugula and tomatoes on soft, toasted bread (That bread is worth the sandwich’s price alone). It was absolutely phenomenal, every detail spot-on. I am so glad more casual cafes and sandwich joints are raising the bar sky-high on vegan grub. The days where I would settle for a roll with lettuce, tomato and mustard, as I did many moons ago, are long gone. Creative and intrepid vegans: Rock. On.
