Vegan Victuals Goes to Spain πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Έ
Lots of Vegan Food in Barceona

Like Madrid, Barcelona is swarmed with vegan options. But I had made many-a day’s mission a meal in Madrid. In Barcelona, food would not be my first priority. I was on my own and free to explore at my pace, which meant sites trumped eats… especially because I had felt so gluttonous in Madrid. But also because food was much more expensive in Barcelona.

Veggie Garden, Carrer dels Γ€ngels, 3, 08001 Barcelona

As I arrived at my hotel from the high speed train from Madrid, I was ready to relax but also famished. My room was not ready, however, so I quickly turned my focus to alleviating my hunger as easily as possible. Exploring the surrounding streets by foot, I happened upon Veggie Garden. It was all-vegan and that was the only criteria at this point. As I sat waiting for my order I wished I had put a bit more effort into finding a place. It seemed very 90’s vegan. When my food arrived I realized this was definitely the case. Though I appreciate a housemade burger, I wasn’t very impressed. It was bland and dry, though nutritious and satiating.

Gocce di latte, Pla de Palau, 4, bajo, 08003 Barcelona

After strolling in the Gothic Quarter as my room was being prepared, I again happened upon an all-vegan eatery… Gocce di latte. But this time I would be very satisfied. Their vegan gelato was rich and creamy. I walked the streets the envy of all eyes. Though like carrying cupcakes, licking an ice cream cone in public really gets you attention. I didn’t care–it was so dreamy.

On recommendation, I got a scoop of chocolate and a scoop of hazelnut.

It was so good I might have snapped picture after every lick.

Vegan Junk Food Bar, Carrer de Manresa 4, Barcelona

I was very excited about Vegan Junk Food Bar. It was on my list of must-hits and I wound up going there twice wanting to try more of their menu. They did things right… stylish instagram-friendly space, cute branding, exciting menu and really yummy food.

There were F-bombs everywhere!

My first visit I got the Happi Ribs, vegan ribs on top of fries with the works smothered in their two signature sauces. The dish was executed really well and was just what I was craving.

Love the little details

My next visit I opted for Smiley Fries…

…along with a McCruelty: Juicy “VJFBβ„’” beef (That’s “Vegan Junk Food Bar” but it seemed like Beyond.. boo!) on their signature black and pink bun topped with cheeze, lettuce, tomato, pickles, potato stix, and VJFBβ„’ sauce.

It looked impressive but the bun was very dry… like stale.

Very colorful and appetizing looking, but I’m not a fan of Beyond.

Overall, Vegan Junk Food Bar gets a lot of style points, but ordering the right thing is key.

Flax & Kale, Carrer dels Tallers, 74b, 08001 Barcelona, Spain

I really needed some nutrients and lots of vegetables… and in this capacity Flax & Kale delivered tenfold. Just a few steps from my hotel, I thought for sure I may stumble in more than once, but I was a busy bee. And prices are steep (i.e. Brooklyn-like) at Flax & Kale.

I knew I can pack in the nutrients by ordering some of their signature drinks… But I didn’t expect to be served bottles at the price I paid.

I went for the Raw Super Bowl… piles of leafy greens, coleslaw, raw hummus, orange betacarotene hummus, zucchini tagliatelle with turmeric pesto, cucumber asazuke, cherry tomatoes with basil pesto, pickled red cabbage and sprouts. So satisfying and so tasty! My tastebuds were singing.

Looking into their menu I see so much I wanna go back and try, namely their weekend brunch. Heck, I really wanna come back to Spain some time soon!!

Chok Shop, Carrer de les Ramelleres, 26, 08001 Barcelona

Another stop in the path between my hotel and the Gothic Quarter’s sites, Chok Shop is a gluten-free bakery with a lot of vegan options.

I just wished the vegan options were labeled… in fact it’d be helpful if all the flavors were labeled as they were unique! When the nice counter gal pointed out all the “vegano” treats, I was overwhelmed and couldn’t keep track to make a choice. But I think I chose a winner!

Some of these were vegan but I don’t remember…

I got the raspberry mango cupcake. It was so delicious–vibrantly flavored… great cake texture (especially given it was gluten-free)… super luscious mango buttercream. Gosh it was heavenly!

Little raspberry filling

Mercado de La Boqueria, La Rambla, 91, 08001 Barcelona, Spain

Mercado de La Boqueria is a hugely popular food market. Though many of the vendors were on that August holiday, there were a ton of fruit and juice stalls offering a wide selection of juices and fresh-cut fruit. And a vegan paella… which was on my list.

Look at these colors!

That’s how you do it, label them babies!

There was a stall with three types of vegan paella. I’m sorry I didn’t catch the name.

I ordered a combination of the vegan paellas and inhaled it on the street.

There was so much more I didn’t get to! What are your favorite vegan options in Barcelona???
