Vegan Treasures of Manhattan Island
Golden Diner in Two Bridges
January 16, 2021

Often the most tasty vegan eats are in non-vegan eateries. Such is the case with Golden Diner‘s Vegetalian Hero, a vegan take on the classic Italian sub made of charred marinaded yuba and salad greens in a red pepper sauce. The hero is cold, fresh, crisp and vinegar-y just like the classic. This sandwich is a gem of a discovery.

Yuba is tofu skin in case you wondered. It’s thin and absorbs flavor. I see that learned chefs like to use it in veggie sandwiches in lieu of packaged vegan stuff. Ok, maybe I only have Superiority Burger in mind. They’ve got a yuba sandwich too.

Their menu has some other vegan offerings, as well as several more veganizable ones. They’ve got a Vegan Grilled Cheese, a Lemongrass Avocado Toast, Vegan Nachos, and a divine-sounding hot cocktail of soju, fresh turmeric, ginger and cinnamon-infused oat milk. My golly how I’d love to walk that down to the Bridges and sip on while I stare out onto the East River. Next time.
