Vegan Mexican π²π½ Eats in
Prospect Heights & Crown Heights, Brooklyn
March 7, 2021
So many vegan options, so little time! Today I am highlighting two Brooklyn eateries offering Mexican vegan options. Starting at Citrico in Prospect Heights.
It was a long week going to a real-life job. I earned this margarita. The simple act of sipping a cocktail placed in front of you with a smile–it’s something I have missed greatly.
The Enchiladas Tofu is a platter of three salsa-drenched tofu scramble-stuffed enchiladas drizzled with vegan crema. So satisfying. I’ve longed for real Mexican through the years as so often cheese is a major component.
Citrico offers a broad range of delicious and authentic vegan Mexican food options, great service, strong drinks. And eating inside, it felt like pre-Covid times.
I couldn’t put my finger on what the “queso” element was on top. It wasn’t a packaged vegan cheese thankfully. It was subtle, soft and tofu-like.
The Vegan Elote–fresh corn on the cob with vegan grated cheese, vegan chipotle mayo, chili powder and epazote. Very flavor-packed. This is a must-order for me when offered. The sweetness from the corn allows for so much heat and savory flavor from toppings and sauces.
Reading a book I got on the sidewalk: Brooklyn simple pleasures. I am also happy to conclude that I have evolved into a woman who could be the subject of Leonard’s romantic songs of tormentedly exciting women. There is something dysfunctionally satisfying about this.
Ursula is a new Mexican cafe in Crown Heights that offers vegans some love.
Though the slick style and color scheme of their web presence could bring some expectations of a similar aesthetic in their food, this is not the case. Far more rustic but, their tasty food suffers the predicament of “to-go”ism in this time of Covid, steaming itself into a uniform mass.
Their Vegan Nachos are topped with refried beans, their vegan queso, green chile, spiced pepitas and roasted squash. They’d improve with more nuanced flavor and texture variance, but satisfying in a 90’s vegan way. It’s gotta be the Nooch.
The Poblano Relleno was almost indiscernible as a stuffed pepper. Ratio of stuffing and overall moisture level were the low points, but heartiness and pops of sweetness (cranberry?) were comforting and yummy.
Thanks for the vegan eats, Prospect Heights… Crown Heights. And see you soon, all points of Brooklyn extending their menus to welcome vegan options. π
