Vegan Gyro in Bay Ridge
at Louie’s Gyros πŸ‡¬πŸ‡·

Vegan options in my own neighborhood are pretty exciting. When I heard of Bay Ridge’s Louie’s Gyros‘ partnership with Staten Island’s Vodega, I knew I’d be strolling on down to try the vegan version of their gyro. Because this is an authentic Greek joint… not a vegan joint trying its hand at Greek. So I strapped on my snow boots and headed down, 10 days after their official grand opening.

I said authentic Greek. That means they graciously help you say gyro the cool way. And that means you get to bask within the familial gregariousness as you wait for your food, hearing the play-by-play of the place’s namesake, Louie, wooing each customer with personal service, one-by-one, while on the line. For me, he offered a try of their dreamy hummus, letting me know he has a friend working on a vegan version of their traditional tzatziki sauce using a plant-based yogurt. I left excited to dig in. But first, a few pictures.

Here’s the vegan gyro meat. I think it was seitan-based, but I couldn’t really tell! But oh, how I would love to see a big rotating chunk of seitan being carved up in every Greek joint!

The vegan gyro meat was shaved thin, had great texture and bit so nicely with the characteristic innards–cold fresh tomato, red onion and Romaine lettuce. It would definitely be improved with that tzatziki sauce. And some of that Vodega vegan mac and cheese would be nice too! Not sure when that is available.

Real vegan gyro. So pleased new eateries are taking on vegan options–and doing a hell of job with it.

I can’t wait to see what new vegan options pop up next. πŸ’š πŸ’š
