Vegan Dinner & A Vegan In A Movie

With my fried chicken battle in mind, I chose an opportunistic visit to Honeybee’s, now in the space once occupied by Cienfuegos above Mother of Pearl. Honeybee’s, a bourbon and rye bar slash barbecue, is one of Ravi DaRossi’s empire of all-vegan eateries, as are the other two listed above. It has got fried vegan chicken, which I will get to talking about after hitting up Superiority Burger tomorrow to close out the battle. In the meantime, my drink and my friend’s burger.

I got the Southern Baptist, which was outstanding but not really worth $16. Or maybe it was, but not really for me, a clueless whiskey drinker. Still I threw down Vegan Victuals gang signs. That’s my blog.

These drinks looked so nice in the dark bar.

This the Honeybee’s Burger with vegan cheddar and pepper jack cheese, onion rings, pickles, and fries.  A far better value than my dish. But packages… foot tapping… It was a good few bites I sampled. More V.V. gang signs looking like air quotes.

With time to kill before the movie, a stop at Whole Foods for a sweet snack. I have been eyeing this Cinnamon Roll Blondie from Greyston Bakery the last few ties I’ve been in the store. I really like their vegan fudge brownie. This more tasted like a crumb cake without crumbs than a cinnamon roll or a blondie, certainly not a cinnamon roll blondie.

In the theater we all split a tub of popcorn. GMO fo’ sure. But we’re at the movies! And actually excited about the film, so we had to partake.

I really enjoyed The Joker. I knew I would when I heard some folks describe it to me as having no action and being slow. Plus it’s Joaquin, one of my most favorite vegan people that I don’t really know. I guess I have always had a bit of a thing for the Phoenix family–River was on my walls as a little girl as I began a long history of only really being drawn to weirdos and F-ups. And admittedly I spent a lot of the film basking in how attractive Joaquin can be within all the attempts to try to hide it–bad teeth, contorted body, mamma’s boyism which is the pinnacle of unattractiveness. All useless. It’s in the eyes. But besides crushing on him, I thought the movie was great. I was so pleased with its arc and how it handled itself. The art direction was masterful and Joaquin was so damn good. I haven’t left a theater not disappointed in quite some time. I am a very harsh critic of movies as they so often compromise so much for mass appeal. But let The Joker’s success in theaters be a message to the film industry. Give us something better more often please. We are starving for complex and rich media.

And speaking of Joaquin, The Earthlings. The first of a trilogy. And if you ever wondered why on Earth I have been vegan for over 20 years, sit through it if you can.
