Welcome to my series that highlights the very best vegan foods in New York City’s boroughs. While vegan options are popping up all over, this series focuses on the non-dairy cream of the crop, options that raise the bar for vegan food and deserve special recognition for their high standards.

I learned the mildly irritating way that all Pastosa Italian markets are not the same. After a bus ride and walk to the flagship store in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, the helpful counter guy let me know that they did not stock the vegan cheese ravioli I had scored at their Eltingville location on Staten Island… that Eltingville had their own specialties and did their own thing. So when I returned to Eltingville’s location to stock up I saw that their stock was even more impressive! Four varieties of vegan ravioli! I bought one of each variety that was in stock and decided I’d have to return for the 4th out-of-stock option (beet!)… I need to keep my freezer stocked. (I just said “stock” way too many times.) Local made vegan ravioli from an authentic Italian market? That’s a Vegan Best of the Boroughs right there. And it ain’t happening anywhere but Staten Island.

I’ll let you know how these jumbo vegetable rav’s are when I get to them. For now let us bask in seeing “vegan” all over.

My haul… Yes–they must have heard my rant about there being no vegan meat raviolis 5 years ago! These were made with Beyond, but I was excited to try a vegan meat ravioli… made local and fresh.

Also, this is the best jar sauce… I think at least.
