Upstate Adventure
April 7, 2022
Though I often hit the road on my own, it isn’t too long until I start encountering characters who seem placed in my path deliberately, who contribute pleasant tangents of concentrated humanity out of the woodwork in passing. Perhaps it is of my own manifesting, drawing out from the periphery the missing puzzle pieces to a complete the scene. Then, stepping back away to enjoy the view.
This was the case on my most recent photo excursion north, where time and people combined to deliver me exactly where I had to be at the right moment. From the late opening of the rental car company, which had me impatiently not feeding the meter at my coffee spot, to the brief interaction with the traffic cop issuing me a ticket, to the time spent building my courage to storm a fence at an abandoned site, to the ecstatic celebration of the successful shoot as my vehicle sank into the mud unbeknownst to me… which had me wandering out of my car the exact moment the angel who’d try his hardest to get me out of said mud just happened to be shutting his car door and walking to his front door. Each moment compounded with purpose and intent. It makes me look around at each step to see what’s in store for me next.
To follow, some random pictures of the day that gave me everything I needed–except stars, on this first new moon of the Milky Way season. But there was plenty of other magic…
Post-photo shoot success bask. I don’t know why I shot a selfie. But I guess it made me giggle that I had just kind of escaped a women’s prison. My hair was haggard and my adrenaline was pumped. Me, in my sporty gear because I was meant to just look like an innocuous hiker person.
Stuck in the mud now. Thankfully the ground wasn’t as soft an saturated as it could have been. There’s the angel trying to get me out. He brought rocks to pack down around each tire, a small shovel and cardboard. In the end, he pushed me out after all else had failed.
I had a quick vegan lunch in New Paltz’s Krishna Kitchen. It did the job, but I didn’t want so many people around me!
I stalk buildings. I’m going to get back to this place. But in the meantime, let me pretend I am just basking at the sunset. I planned on doing a night shoot here, but the clouds moved it.
And this cool abandoned house was where I did an early try at astrophotography a few years back. I decided I have to stay overnight in this area as there is much to return for!
Just a small taste of adventure. I’m ready for my much longer Spring Break adventure. Stick around!
