Unicorn Birthday Cake, On the Fly πŸ¦„

So when she sketched a picture of the cake she wanted for her birthday, I got to work. It would need brightly colored layers; it would need to be a unicorn. And it would need to be done without having to hit the grocery store.

A big 1.5 batch of golden vanilla cake would turn to …

… blue, purple and pink.

Ready for baking

Frosting time… I would use up the rest of the buttercream from the previous days’ baking endeavors (Dia de los Muertos cake and her birthday cupcakes for school!) Of course I needed a new batch too–to cover the unicorn head.

Layers set and ready for frosting

Yada yada yada, now it was done! I used an ice cream cone for its horn, some trimmed Twizzlers from the kids’ halloween candy for the eyes, and–cutely–two sprinkles for a little mouth.

Setting for slicing

On the spare bed!

In the kids’ kitchen we sang. She loved her unicorn cake. πŸ™‚

Though I did overbake the layers… oopsy.

But what a cute impromptu unicorn cake it is!
