Underneath the Clouds
Night Sky Around Bridgeport, California

It was kind of a bummer to pass through Big Pine, Bishop, and Lee Vining, thriving stops with plenty of comforts abound, to arrive at the one-horse town of Bridgeport, California. It had little to offer me but an overpriced room with a shared bathroom, overpriced gas and absolutely no satisfying food options.

When I fell asleep at 7 p.m., it was for the best. I hadn’t had a good night’s sleep in quite some time. I took the red eye flight inbound and only slept a few uncomfortable hours sleep that night. The next I got some shut-eye on a picnic table and the car, but nothing more than a few hours combined. The next two night I was in LA and staying out late with friends. And finally the next night I was camping at Alabama Hills, mostly tossing and turning and checking the sky for stars continuously. When I woke up at 2 a.m. and the weather looked clear, I jumped in my car–ready for some stars.

The mountains had been thwarting attempted night shoots since the start of the trip, and I was determined to capture some magic above. As it turned out the clouds would overtake the sky once again. But not before I got a couple of worthy shots in…

I’m getting better at focusing. The stars are crisp! Interesting to note that as I shot these shots I was hearing cows moo up a storm and some trotting steps charging at me. When I drove through in the morning I saw there were horses and cows in the field.

Next to the busy road was a silly choice to try and shoot. But here is a truck passing by that looked cool. The sky was an amazing shade of teal.

The clouds overtook and I went back to my overpriced room.
