Some West Virginia Vegan Eats

Finally having electricity and running water at my will, here is a photo dump of some vegan eats from my days in West Virginia.

Some sweet treats from the all-vegan Venerable Bean Bakery in Morgantown, part of the Mountain People’s Food Co-op. Selection was pretty low since it was later afternoon prior to their being closed the next day. The chocolate chip cookie was okay–too sweet and kinda stale. Plus it was very difficult to open without breaking it the way it was wrapped so tight in plastic wrap. Why is it wrapped in plastic wrap anyway? If it isn’t fresh, state it and sell it at a discount.

Again, it was slim pickings as I wouldn’t normally go for chocolate on chocolate… But it was good. Moist and good chocolate flavor variety in the cake, buttercream and coating.

File this under totally boring. River Birch Cafe promised an “instagrammable” bowl. What do you think? It was supposed to have pitaya powder on them bananas… and the Fruity Pebbles would have given it a color pop but they are not vegan.

Clearly it’s the Seitan Wings from Mountaineer Tap House that take the cake in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Onward to Fayetteville, West Virginia–near where I’d camp for two nights. I first headed to The Handle Bar + Kitchen, part of Arrowhead Bike Farm, for their Vegan Barbacoa tacos. The vibe was fun and bikester, if that’s your thing. It was kind of a bummer it was Impossible meat since the taco is mostly “meat.”

Onward to a very small portion of tofu scramble from Cathedral Cafe. I suppose it was cheaper than usual ($7.99), but I needed a big breakfast after hiking several miles before breakfast. I really do appreciate the option though!

Now I am heading East… I had to stop at Lewisburg as they have been named “coolest small town in the USA.” Hmmmm. Well I do have some data now after getting tacos at Thunderbird Taco. And they’re pretty cool. I mean, just look at my tiki glass for my lemonade. And look at that great attention to detail… sugared rim, little bit of fizz

And they knew what “vegan” meant. Most of their tacos can be easily veganized… so I got three of them. On the left, the Ancho Sweet Potato (chili roasted sweet potatoes, grilled pineapple, salsa roja, and pickled onions). The middle, the Chili Lime Tofu (Citrusy tofu, pico de gallo, shredded cabbage, charred corn, and chimichurri sauce). And on the end, the Roasted Cauliflower (Roasted cauliflower, salsa roja, and charred corn).

They were fantastic, albeit a bit wet. Should have been double-wrapped or things strained a bit.

Thanks for some vegan eats while I played inside your beauty, West Virginia.
