Short Call Reserve in DCA, Part 1

As I adjust to my erratic schedule as a reserve flight attendant, some sites and eats close enough to the airport to explore. Being “on reserve” is the dues a new FA has to pay: several months, possibly more, of being on-call… 14 blocks of time, 5 days a week. I have to be able to report to a gate ready to work within 2 hours or I sit “hot” and ready at the airport in uniform to make it to any gate in 15 minutes. With a day of short call, I decided to do some exploring in this new temporary city of mine.

A stop at Georgetown Cupcake, a shop I had checked out in NYC’s SoHo back when I was very obsessed with cupcakes years ago. I would think that since that visit they would have more vegan offerings but that is not the case. It is the same one I loved back then: The Vegan Apple Cinnamon topped with vegan cream cheese frosting and a red fondant flower. Pretty, perfect and delicious.

Of note, I am actually visiting Georgetown Cupcake while I am in Georgetown! Flagship, baby!

While I was in Georgetown, something that has been on my list for quite some time: The Exorcist stairs. If you saw the movie you might remember that it is the stairs that solves the whole darn problem of that fussy demonic spirit. This is a favorite horror movie of mine.

I walked up very carefully.

A stop at Busboys & Poets for some grub… The Vegan Hash was tofu, onion, mushroom, tomato, spinach, cauliflower, and vegan sausage. It was good but very oily and the sausage meat’s flavoring was too overpowering. And it needed more potatoes or toast to be more substantial.

I wanted to check out this quirky roadside attraction… a pay phone that gives out free jokes. Such indulgences on the road must be filled.

They were all clean and good hearted.

Settled into my new temporary space. Living here in DC is the only way to make these beginning months work. I miss home everyday, but we’re playing the long game… and I get to fly home when I have days off! It’s a weird lifestyle that I am adjusting to. Thankfully I have an old friend who lives in DC and he has a spare room.

Where to next, DC?
