Running Away to Jersey, Part 3
Winslow Junction Train Graveyard π
September 28, 2020
Emblematic of our nation’s doctrine of expansion, the train was opportunistic engineering at a grand scale. But now their metal parts are often strewn about defying nature in striking ways that I like to photograph. Metal graveyards, like this on Staten Island, are alluring to me in this way. I would say “juxtaposition” but it’s a word I use when poking fun at people rattling off pretentiously. A quick detour on my trip to the Southern end of Jersey’s land, I couldn’t resist the opportunity for some heavy metal. π€
Within rural Hammonton, New Jersey is the Winslow Junction Train Graveyard, the old home of the Southern Railroad Company of New Jersey. Though there are a lot of web sources describing many trains to explore, currently there are very few trains to see unfortunately. So the stop might not be worth the drive.
But this one, the area’s most prominent, was a nice subject. I wanted to wave a hanky from the back.
An easily accessible second car
So those two train cars are all that’s really around without possibly seeking permission to look at some of the trains in a more secure area. At the time of my visit, there was no one to ask and plenty of No Trespassing signs. The restored trains below were easy to capture along the boundary of the more secure area. I also want to mention that there seemed to be a worn wooded trail that may bring you to the secured area, but I did not attempt it.
