Rise & Shine in Los Angeles

A true indicator of a city’s vegan-friendliness is its breakfast options. In celebration of beautiful mornings in Los Angeles, here is the food that helped to shaped jam-packed days. In the interest of the backlog of posts I am experiencing, I’ll just say that LA might have the best vegan food… in the world? Possibly. I’ll get back to you on that.

Kitchen Mouse in Highland Park

This is how to recover: water, fresh-squeezed orange juice, and a latte.

These unassuming cookies were possibly the best cookies I’ve ever had. I know that sounds grandiose, but it is true. I will now begin to keep track of these declarations.

Mikey’s Chilaquiles, An amazingly nourishing breakfast. The only part that didn’t meet my standard was the tofu scramble. It seemed blended in consistency? Making a bit of a mushy mound.

You have to eat with your hands!

A donut gift from my Donut Fried, also in Highland Park.

The Angry Samoa, a delicious vanilla cake donut dipped in chocolate, and topped with caramel, toasted coconut, and chocolate stripes. You know, like the Girl Scout cookie.

I might have previously declared Donut Friend pretty high up there on the donut hierarchy. And they get points for their classic punk rock theme.

A stop at Honey Hi in Echo Park after pedal-boating on some swans. There prices are high but it is because they make their food and drinks with the most magical ingredients. This is MP’s beautiful cashew yogurt parfait. I just looked at it.

Her golden chai tea latte. I had an amazing smoothie I didn’t take a picture of… because I was moaning and groaning about how good it was, When Harry Met Sally style. It’s called Golden Retriever and it has Diaspora turmeric, chai spices, vanilla bean, banana, coconut butter, and coconut milk.

This was the best. Jewel in Silver Lake.

First, a whole lotta lattes

We went halfsies on these mind-blowing toasts. On the left, The Avocado: sliced avocado, cashew-herb spread, pickled red onion, carrots, puffed quinoa togarashi. On The right, The Carrot Lox: smoked cured carrots, cashew-herb cream cheese, capers, pickled shallots, fresh dill, and everything spice. Flavor explosions… nourishing and healthful flavor explosions.

The spread of, I believe, vegan donuts that we did not partake in. But everything in the place was so pretty in design.

A gal and her golden milk latte. Do you see how my eyes are very serious about these. (Look ma’am, I’m wearing your Xmas present!)

Boy, do I love breakfast in LA. And lunch and dinner… but we’ll get to that later.
