Planting Fields Arboretum
Oyster Bay, New York

I was so happy to get an intimate tour of the mansion and greenhouses at Planting Fields. The former Gold Coast estate of William Robertson Coe and Mai Rogers Coe, heiress and daughter of Standard Oil partner Henry Huttleston Rogers. Like many of the preserved former estates on Long Island’s North Shore, there is such fascinating history and bygone beauty to explore.

Firstly, some early blooms in advance ofย Planting Fields‘ย upcoming Camellia Festival. This gorgeous flower is the main attraction of The Camellia Greenhouse at Planting Fields, a space that was constructed in 1917 and then doubled in size in 1922 under the supervision of landscape architects John Charles Olmsted and Frederick Law Olmsted Jr of Olmsted Brothers. These flowers are truly captivating, and so I got real close to attempt to capture their many-petaled loveliness.

And Holly i.r.l.

A nice collection of poinsettias

A flower to make you feel inadequate

Outside, a fragile tree area

And a soupy lawn in the winter mist

A baby hobbit house I’d like to move into

The Buffalo room… hard to capture with the camera. The hand painted mural was stunning and nicely texturous!

This bedroom mural is even more impressive

So much opulence.
