Passing Through Huntington Village

Vegan options are popping up all over the place on Long Island. So I try to squeeze them into my daily routines and errands right away. After a recent hot tip, I checked out Radio Radio in Huntington Village for lunch. They have some promising-reading vegan options on their Southern/BBQ menu: a seitan meatloaf and jackfruit pulled pork. And they clearly label other vegan stuff.

I was able to sample both the seitan and the jackfruit inside soft corn tortillas along with charred vegetable salsa fresca, napa slaw (missing?) and chimichurri. Taco-style. I wish I hadn’t gone the taco route as they were way too wet and sloppy, leaking their juices all the way down to my elbow.  Next time it’ll be the entree served with their vegan cornbread.

Afterwards, I walked over to Wild Flours for a gluten-free vegan cupcake.  “Gluten-free” being a thing, and its embrace by mainstream eateries and markets, has indirectly helped increase vegan options. But the texture of gluten-free vegan cakes is never satisfying to me. Either they’re too dense or too crumbly.

And Ben and Jerry’s is touting its almond milk-based options. Or you can head down the block to Herrell’s (blogged about here).
