Off-season at the Jersey Shore

The Jersey Shore has lots of goodies and they’re better to see (and eat) when everyone and their mother is not clogging up the Garden State Parkway. Spending a beautiful Spring-like Winter day at Sandy Hook, part of Gateway National Recreation Area, would bring some beautiful sites to share. But first, here’s what we ate.

Breakfast at Alternative Plate in Lake Como, a low key counter spot with some hearty breakfast offerings using P.B.M. That’s Plant-Based Meat! They’re on a mobile and brick-n-mortar mission to get people to eat better. So their menu is loaded with familiar words that welcome curious omnivores to the plant side.

The Pork Roll Egg & Cheese has got Follow Your Heart Cheese, some packaged vegan cold cuts along with tofu on a toasted pita. All hail the breakfast sandwich!

The Tofu Scramble wrap with a flavor-packed tofu scramble, Lightlife sausage, avocado and tomato.

I was so excited to try Stewart’s Root Beer in Hazlet! They’ve got an all-vegan menu at this location paired with the signature Stewart’s vibe, mking it a unique vegan option to carb back up after basking in the sun all day.

Here’s to that all-American feel…

…with a new spin. Just why this location offers a vegan menu, who knows! I am just thankful for the options… and that they don’t shy away from the “v word.”

We got the cheesy garlic bread because, as two vegan Italian ladies, we miss it. Soft, nostalgic bread made for some divine bites.

And we split a meatball hero with that Violife cheese. Really great meatballs that I couldn’t recognize though they seemed a bit Field Roast-y. Were they housemade?? Tell me, Stewart’s Root Beer diner spot. Either way, a welcome and scrumptious dinner as the sun went goodbye and we headed back to Brooklyn.

But because it was only 5 minutes away and I was craving a sweet bite, Papa Ganache‘s in Matawan. There was not much left as it was almost closing time. I got this cookie dough cupcake featuring the Cookie Monster and…

…two for the road. Strawberry Shortcake & Drunken Elvis.

Across from me, the Caramel Pretzel. Though Papa Ganache cupcakes look real good, they are always real cold and dry like they were made last week. And the frosting is a solid slab of wax whose aeration and whip is long gone. I’m your QC, Papa.

I always love exploring you, Jersey Shore. Thanks for a day of eats!
