Misc. Out & About DC

As one might expect, DC has the best museums. And many of the best, the Smithsonian family of museums, are free! These are some shots from The Smithsonian American Art Museum. So much beautiful art… it can take up many afternoons of perusing.

I liked her face…

…and the quote.

And the presidential portrait gallery is also there. I was amused to see tourists posing with the laser-printed picture of Trump from 2021. His team was considering artists for a painted portrait, but nothing yet.

The Sunshine Sammy at Black Coffee in Georgetown’s description drew us in, but it was too much bread. The focaccia was dry and not that oily and airy bite that our imaginations pictures. I liked the tomato jam, however.

A really cool museum I did not take a lot of pictures of… The National Building Museum. Despite the Lego exhibit which may make it seem like a kids’ space, the architectural museum was well done and for serious architectural nerds. This is just the case with museums in DC; they’re the crème de la crème.

I wanted a tiki bar, but there are no true, authentic ones in the area unfortunately. So we stopped in Throw Social a heavy handed Instagrammable bar that is grossly overpriced and was blaring disgusting music–as in very sexually explicit. Not to sound prudish but the gratuitousness of it was the most unsexual and off-putting thing to my ears. Not sexy at all.

We did manage a smile or two…

Craving real flavorful food made from plants–and not in a lab–we doorbusted Shouk for a proper veggie burger. Not Beyond. Not Impossible. This is their “TV Famous” veggie burger: housemade patty, tomato jam, pickled turnip, arugula, charred onion, creamy tahina. It was dreamy perfection.

This is real good food.

CVS stop 😂

A stop at DC Vegan is a must for any vegan-leaning visitor. There is that Raspberry White Chocolate cheesecake. “A best ever”

Potato Skins! I have been craving these for a while now because you can never find them vegan and they take a bunch of time to make all the components on your own. These had cashew cream, veg bacon, scallion and sour cream.

So good but, like everything now, an arm & a leg.

I got the Chesepeake Fritter sandwich made from hearts of palm. It was very good. Bring on the Old Bay, baby!

On a walk and a whim, I stopped at Teddy’s Roti Shop. Always interested in international food options, I was also drawn in by the vintage sign. I was able to ascertain the vegan options easily thanks to the sweet counter person.

But first a ginger pineapple juice… these two are a dreamy pair when it comes to beverages. And I like that the ginger kicks my arse.

I got the Hot Dhalpuri Wrapped with curry, potatoes and channa. It lasted several days it was so big… portable, protein packed and very yummy.

Back at DCA and back at Mezeh. Oh how I love their bowls. Thank goodness for Mediterranean for easy and flavor-packed vegan options.

Craving more freshness and crunch, lunch was bao from Bangbop. Thri tofu bao is so good! I crave this combo often, so I am happy to find them.

Yesssss, DC.
