Good Day Sunshine (With Fried Chicken Sandwiches)
November 5, 2018
Before I go on about how this fried “chicken” sandwich tasted, here are some hues from a Sunday in which the Autumn sun blazed glorious beams. Let’s follow them out and about. First, they crept into my basement apartment as I prepared my lunch for the week, making this radish a neon pink.
Then, they ran down the block to illuminate the NYC Marathon route. Bay Ridge had a full band on the sidewalk and many already lined up to cheer those kook-jobs on.
This tree and that sky. This is why it’s my favorite season. And those October sunrises and sunsets. π
And before it gets too cold to meander about, a brunch date on the other side of Brooklyn. I have always wanted to try Bunna‘s brunch menu. They’re an authentic Ethiopian eatery in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Piles of flavorful things: From the foreground and back–Butecha, their scramble of ground chickpea stuffing mixed with onion, peppers, garlic, and ginger; Dinch Azifa, Ethiopian home fries–Smashed potatoes with mustard seed, jalapeno, and onion; Duba Fir Fir, crumbled pieces of injera with kombocha squash, berbere, onion, ginger, garlic and topped with cashew ergo, their cashew-based yogurt, along with a side of Kita.
A sunny walk to Rudy’s Pastry Shop in Ridgewood, Queens. We wanted to see if there were any vegan items left.
Unfortunately they were out of cupcakes…
so we got a delicious brownie. Gosh, that’s so good! An old school bakery with a vegan option is the best of both worlds.
Later, Hartbreakers. π
I was very excited to try their housemade vegan chicken cutlets, all deep-fried and spectacular. This was the Picnic Basket: their delicious chicken-y thing, seitan bacon, vegan cheddar, creamy slaw, pickled red onion and their “mondo sauce.”
My Thunderbird: A scrumptiously breaded and season deep fried vegan chicken thingy, tangy slaw, pickles, with their cilantro-jalapeΓ±o aioli. This was one of the best sammies I’ve had in a real long time. I think I heart Hartbreakers!
A closer look at the fantastic breading.
Thanks for varied and expansive vegan options, dear Brooklyn.
