G.O.A.T. Vegan Sandwich at Renegades of Sunset

Renegades of Sunset have a new Wednesday special that is off the charts. The last time I ate this sandwich I called it The Best Vegan Fried Chicken Sandwich. Now I am going to call it the Best Vegan Sandwich, in general. You just think on that while you look at these pictures.

Every detail exactly to my liking. The craggy fried seitan, under its crisp skin, so tender, juicy… not that dense, thick slab that seitan can sometimes be. Once the seitan is perfected, which takes loving care, the rest is less complicated…. but all the more difficult in its simplicity. You need freshness (greens and tomato) and you need some assertive breaks from the fried seitan–raw red onion, pickles, and an herbaceous dill ranch sauce. All housemade. All vegan. No weird stuff. Nice guys, too. Which counts.

Of course, this sandwich is jumping right into my fried chicken battle, which has been on hold since I’d been traveling about. Renegades of Sunset have brought it with all they got, taking place of the Bao champion. Because I said so. And because Darlings hasn’t had that tofu Bao special in frever. Yes, frever. Pickle Shack and I, and now Renegades of Sunset, have a long history. They get special treatment…

So they’re up against Urban Vegan Kitchen. That means I need to eat another one, at least. And I promise to not let this Battle linger within months. Given the expanding field of vegan options, I want to get at it and name a New York City winner in time for my trip to Los Angeles, which has some fantastic-looking vegan fried chicken.
