Fire & Ice
Eternal Flame Falls

Another place I couldn’t wait to return to once winter came, Eternal Flame Falls.

This naturally-fueled eternal flame is thought to be caused by potent gas seepage from the ancient shale bedrock, however some researchers believe this to be an incorrect hypothesis given the temperature of the rock relative to the thousands of years the flame has been said to be burning. The beauty and mystery of this Eternal Flame is rare as it is the only one in the world burning within an active waterfall.

Once the ground was white, we set out to see its beauty. It was a crisp, sunny and glorious day, despite the cold.

Hiking to the falls was very slippery, but I had packed my spikes. Ah, fire and ice…

Dorking it up

Another beautiful place in Western New York!
