City of Rocks State Park, Faywood, New Mexico

Wanting solitude and wanting stars, I took a couple of flights to reach the City of Rocks State Park campground in New Mexico, not to be mistaken with the City of Rocks in Idaho–which I plan to visit later in the month.ย  In one of my most favorite states, this state park might be the most wonderful camping backdrop I’ve yet to experience. With Rocks towering 40 feet, I chose my campsite carefully: Site 3, Virgo.ย  This guide ensures you are within the downtown of rocks and not the separate and boring campsites with electrical hook-up. ย

The park was empty–it turns out that my hitting up the desert in August had worked again.  No people, no noises–except the wind blowing my tent flaps. Worried of its strength, I put an enormous rock in my tent, and several around its spikes.

The sky was uneasy, but the spurts of rain left me with a tremendous rainbow to play with as I waited for evening.  Forthcoming: a star shoot.
