Camp Beechwood
Abandoned Girl Scout Camp
May 30, 2021

Abandoned for the last 20 or so years, Camp Beechwood in Sodus, New York still contains the decaying remains of a Girls Scout camp that operated from 1929 (!) to the 1990’s. It was a must on my trip to New York’s Finger Lakes region… and I packed my vintage Girls Scout uniform for the occasion. I did not explore the park extensively as I knew I wanted to return and actually camp there. The views of the (Great) Lake Ontario were gorgeous and the opportunity to camp where hundreds of intrepid gals had for decades is a huge draw. Though there were campers set up in the space, I explored easily. Here are the relics in their current state. I got to get back here soon!

Lake Ontario and some prostrate trees.

This is the official Girls Scout salute. I looked it up because I remember that the Boys Scouts had a salute. My brothers were Boy Scouts and I remember stories of my Dad raising his middle finger to mock the salute at “den” meetings, though I don’t know if this was a joke that I interpreted as reality when I was a kid.

I know I say this often, but I have to get back here soon!
