California Desert Adventure ☀️
East Jesus in Slab City

Off-season in Slab City is like a Ghost Town. We drove through the self-sufficient community of wanderers out of curiosity and found our way to the sculpture park East Jesus, impressed by their fascinating display of art installations. I will leave their interpretation up to you, because: Art.

Things to know about my visit: Way hot, I became quite disorientated and thought I might collapse. I was so intrigued by the sculptures all about that I stayed in the very powerful sun longer than I should have. My cooling towel, which had served me so well in Utah, evaporated instantly.

My phone also said: “I can’t work right now; it’s too hot” or other similar message.

Though I enjoyed the art, the Survival Guide I read afterwards is pretty bizarre. Though I am sure each rule is a result of many wackjob visitors having a warped sense of reality or entitlement and causing a spectrum of annoyances. Actually, that’s the danger of a place like Slab City. Folks who find themselves on the fringe may be there for a variety of reason, not all dreamy, romanticized and good intentioned… signage about Slab City indicates it isn’t a Utopian civilization of troubadours. There are “real” anarchists there (odd declaration) and many signs threatening violence.

The television display was my favorite.

Viva Star Wars

Terrible psychiatric advice

Agreed.

And with that, our way hot trek into desert road culture came to an end. It was time for our first hotel room.
