Beachin’ {Eats} in Queens

Summer eats are a celebration of color and freshness. After a long weekend of repeated trips to the shores of the Rockaways, here is what I ate. Above, avocado toast on a thick slice of housemade bread from La Fruteria at the bustling 97th Street concessions on Rockaway Beach.

And a fresh-pressed juice. It was supposed to have a bunch of stuff we couldn’t taste at all. Like ginger, turmeric, Etc. Healthful options are great, but I can do without the hipster crowd all about. Who wears a neckerchief to the beach?!

Quinoa Salad

There were lots more eat options getting ready to go. I’m remember when this concession stand had Babycakes, the vegan bakery! Now, it seems, plenty of veg options. Like an arepa, Bao, and burrito. I’ll have to come back on an off day to try β€˜em our though prices are real high.

Cuisine By Claudette has a few spots in the Rockaways with healthy stuff–juices, prepared foods for easy grab on the way to the beach, and a ton of…

vegan cupcakes! The ones with the pink border are vegan, which reminded of that joke about the stop signs with the white borders being optional. Because they all had pink borders!

I got the vanilla, because that is always the quickest way to know the scoop. The cake was dense, but tasty. More muffin-like. The frosting was a bit salty. Perhaps it was a just this batch.

The best food, though, was at The Greek‘s. I ate like a Queen in Queens. Here was a fantastic curry with Barry’s Tempeh, sweet potato, green beans, red pepper and some lemongrass for flavor. Tons of ginger, onion, garlic. He really flavor-packs his food.

The curry along with quinoa, cilantro, and the sacred squeeze of lime.

The amazing chia pudding with lime and chili-dusted mango. This was flavor perfection. I wrote down the ingredients and helped make the second batch. I’ll post soon because I want every one to try this amazing pudding!

Tacos times two. What can you do but devour them.
