Barrow Food House
Vegan Options in Riverhead, Long Island

I love me a menu with marked vegan options! Barrow Food House makes it easy to see the makings of a tasty vegan meal in an area with no all-vegan eateries. With some adjustments, we were satisfied in our bellies… but not necessarily in our wallets. Let’s start with our bellies

We got the Kale, Veggie & Avocado Salad–local kale, rainbow carrots, cucumber, avocado, pepitas, and a subbed vegan dressing. Flavorful, hearty and just what my body was craving.

Here is the vegan version of the Bean & Mushroom Burger made with black bean, mungbean, quinoa, mushroom, and poblano, topped with carrot kimchi, and cashew/avocado crema. Very tasty because of so many great additions to the patty and oh lordy the crema and kimchi carrots: incredible. Thank the lord it is not Beyond or Impossible engineered food product!

I guess it was not the greatest value considering it had no sides. But more than that is the promise of service assumed by the price points of the menu. The restaurant really operates as a counter spot now. You go and order at a window… then they call your name to hand off your food–fast food-style. Kinda really miss service at restaurants.

So then you’re done. You ordered at the window, you bussed your own food, you threw out your garbage and when you pay there is no way to tip less than an 18% tip. I’d like to remind restaurants that tipping relates to service. So given all I did at my visit, I was expecting a tip! I know, I know, restaurants had a tough time this past year. But so have all of us. Please adjust ordering system to meet your new service levels. (Oh here are the drinks… $12 drinks in plastic cups)

Overall, delicious and flavorful food, but πŸ’Έ πŸ’Έ
