At Low Tide
Staten Island Boat Graveyard

The Witte Marine Equipment Company was once the only marine salvage yard in New York City. But they could not dismantle and resell crafts as quickly as all kinds of industries were dumping them off. The result, a variety of historic ships still sit on what is now known as the Staten Island Boat Graveyard. (source) It’s a truly fascinating place that holds time in a very striking way–via rust, muck, mire.

Arising from the wisdom of several visits’ experience, to follow is a list of things to bring on a trip to Staten Island’s Boat Graveyard.

1.) Rubber rain boots. This is a must as even when Arthur Kill’s tide is at its lowest, regular shoes will be destroyed by the deep mud pockets you’ll have to traverse. That being said, you’ll need a box or bag to put the muddy boots into after changing out of them.

2.) A steady footing. Walking on a bog is difficult, especially when holding your photo equipment. Look for well-worn paths of flattened peat. Step quickly and don’t stand in one place too long.

3.) A friend. You’ll want them to look at in a state of panic as you sink 5 inches into the mud, suctioning your boots fiercely, trapping you just long enough to remember your puerile fear of quicksand.

4.) Long pants and sleeves. Because: mosquitos. This is their turf. So quit your whining; you are the intruder this time.

5.) A telephoto lens.
