Abandoned Lake Placid Tower
April 1, 2021
When built in 1960, Lake Placid’s 240-foot Tower (aka Happiness Tower) was the largest concrete structure in the world. It halted operation in 1982 because the owners were guilty of tax evasion, then it reopened in 1986 with random quirky additions–attempts to entice visitors. But the petting zoo and “highest pay phone in Florida” couldn’t help it from again closing in 2003. After that the roof was donned with a cellular antenna and the lower level restaurant continued operating until 2015. Then I came along and took pictures of it. So odd that such a remarkable structure sits useless, but that is the lure of the abandoned place–in this case, a 240-foot landmark of time’s march. (source)
