Abandoned Brooklyn, Abandoned Queens

One of the the things I like about Queens and Brooklyn is that there is still places where you can feel like an explorer, still places that every square inch is not branded with an advertisement or a means to generate profit. With a weekend within the corners of my borough and neighboring borough, some of the decay that livens my love for New York City.

Floyd Bennett Field is part of Gateway National Recreation Area, one of my favorite areas to find escape from the typical city strife. What I love is that there are sill decrepit airplane hangars from its former use, an important naval air station during World War II. It was also New York City’s first municipal airport in the 1930’s! The interiors are closed off but the exteriors are the real show.

Fort Tilden is another neat spot to explore off the beaten path for the most part. The beach is pretty popular, yes, but there is a lot of isolated spots around it that transport you back in their feel and dishevelment. I am not all that sure what purpose some of the buildings set aside to erode may have served. But the generalized abandonment of purpose in one of the most populated and developed cities has a pleasing juxtaposition.
