A Day On The Road

I like to take the long way home… and find things to see, find things to eat. Like the vegan tofu “wings” from Bullfrog Brewery. Those were from Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

On the see list, this Pink House in Wellsville, New York. The ornate Victorian home has had a bit of an unfortunate history with tales of two deaths on the property–the beautiful and broken hearted wife of the home’s builder who took her life (after her father forged a letter ending things with her true love whom he did not approve of) and then, later, her niece–the child born of the builder and heartbroken woman’s sister, whom he married shortly after his wife’s suicide. (source) Descendants of the home builder currently reside in the home. Anyway, it’s pretty darn pretty.

Did you know Mark Twain is buried in Elmira, New York? I visited Woodlawn Cemetery to see. Because he was a pretty clever fellow. And I appreciate cleverness. It’s almost extinct.

No quotes here, surprisingly. But pens for the writer.

Otherwise, it is a nice old cemetery and an easy walk in the Spring breeze. Nothing too extravagant.

Many of the ladies were congregated on one plot… of a ladies man apparently.

Sometimes I see myself and my smallness shocks me. In my head, I am as big as a gorilla. I don’t mean that I think I’m fat, like all body image confused. I just feel larger than life in my head, like this song. But I also think I’m a big idiot too.

The Binghamton area has several vintage carousels… carved wood, no fiberglass. And beautiful. Unfortunately neither the park’s carousel nor the park’s ladies room were open when I stopped in though it was a glorious and warm Sunday.

Downtown Grind is a “funky” coffee shop with a small menu of tasty breakfast bites, some that are vegan friendly. Breakfast–vegan–I’m there.

My oat milk and latte and Avocado Toast. The avocado was almost indiscernible with the very brine-y pastrami-flavored seitan, whole gran mustard and pickled red cabbage. But it was really tasty! How could it not be with all that?!

More food: Umani Gorilla in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. This grab-n-go counter spot has a few tables but is in the process of expanding! Space and menu. I was so delighted to discover this all-vegan eatery. They make some damn good eats!

Veganized Nutty Bars! As in, Little Debbie.

Delicious.

My Philly cheese steak with candied peppers and scallion. It hit all the notes. And a side of creamy potato salad. Heavenly. I can’t wait to return as Wilkes-Barre is “on the way” often.
