5 Borough Caribbean Vegan Report
Lakou, Haitian in Crown Heights

The first in my series of reports on the diverse eateries offering authentic Caribbean inspired fare in New York City is Lakou Cafe in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. With clearly labeled vegan options that range from sweet and savory pastry to breakfast items and sandwiches to Kava-infused libations, I made the long trek to Lakou Cafe for pick-up with hearty enthusiasm. My efforts were certainly well worth it as each part of my order was flavor-packed and delicious.

Starting with a Ginger Pineapple Juice that tickled my throat with an ample zing of ginger.

One of two vegan savory crepes (and one sweet!) offered, I got the Curry Chickpea Crepe, packed with creamy coconut curried chickpeas, red onion confit and spinach. It was fantastic… even after I nursed it all the way back home on the long subway ride.

All the colors and all the flavor, the love and care of ingredients is apparent.

I had to partake in some sweet and savory pastry. First the collard green puff pastry.

As delicious as it looks with a tender flakey crust.

A Haitian Elephant Ear… very sweet and thin. To me it tasted like a huge frosted flake.

A wonderful start to celebrating all the flavors of New York City. Thank you, Lakou Cafe. I hope to try some of the other vegan items soon, but Crown Heights has a ton of vegan Caribbean / Ital offerings!
