🥨 Pretzel Love 🥨

Tempted by the occasion of National Pretzel Day, I made a batch of pretzels–the oldest snack in the world–using this very easy recipe. A bit of a neurotic, I love a recipe like this–one where active tasks are broken up with time to do the dishes. And like many, it starts with a unassuming ball of dough expanding into a massive airy, yeast-smelling delight.

Nah, I don’t need to oil the top of the plastic wrap. It ain’t going to rise that much… Wrong. Always oil the interior top of the plastic wrap.

After a few punches, I cut it into 15 pieces. I had an idea to make these for my students, celebrating our progress in a wacky year.

Class 65R. I struggled with the “R” . . looks more like Einstürzende Neubauten logo. Ok, I struggled with the “5” too.

After the baking soda bath–had no rock salt, so I just used kosher.

Looking all pretzel-like

Hard not to eat them all…

But I did have to try!

They looked less impressive the next day. I packed them when they were too warm and they got a bit soggy.

They were enjoyed nonetheless.

Happy National Pretzel Day!
